The Hudson River has a powerful protector in the Hudson 7
led by Mayor Gary Bassett
2021 will mark the third anniversary of the Hudson River Drinking Water Intermunicipal Council (Hudson 7), which focuses on protecting the Hudson River as the primary source of drinking water for more than 100,000 people. Better known as the Hudson 7, the council is made up of elected officials from the City and Town of Poughkeepsie, the Village and Town of Rhinebeck, and the towns of Esopus, Hyde Park and Lloyd.
Led by Mayor Gary Bassett, who is chairman and a founding member, priority concerns identified by the council include combined sewer overflows; the risk of spill of crude oil or other hazardous substances; Central Hudson’s remediation of coal tar related to a former manufactured gas plant in Poughkeepsie; disinfection byproducts; the presence of pharmaceuticals and other unregulated contaminants; the submerged route of the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) in the Hudson River estuary and the recent turbid releases from the Ashokan Reservoir that have reached the river and all five of the council’s drinking water intakes.
